Introducing Andrew & Jenny

How did you first get involved with Ladner Christian Reformed Church?

Jenny and Andrew: We came to know LCRC while we were attending Living Water Chinese Christian Church. After LWCCC closed, we decided to join LCRC.

Tell us about your family.

Jenny: I have my husband, Andrew, and my son, Jenson. We will be expecting a baby boy coming this summer. We had been living in Richmond, but when Jenson arrived, we moved to Ladner and love it here. I was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Canada when I was twelve. I have 2 elder sisters and 1 younger brother.

Andrew: Jenny, Jenson and I moved to Ladner 3 years ago when Jenson was born. Both of our families immigrated from Hong Kong in the 90s. After graduation from university, we both worked in Richmond and met each other at the bank where we both worked. Coincidentally, we found we went to the same high school and university but had never met there!

What do you do Monday through Saturday?

Jenny: I worked at a bank for 12 years, but I became a full- time mom after Jenson was born. I spend most of the time taking care of Jenson. We spend time together as a family on Sundays and Mondays. I work out three days a week while Jenson is in daycare and I take him to soccer on Saturdays.

Andrew: Work … work ... and more work .... I am a financial planner as well as a restaurant owner. Twenty-four hours in a day are not enough!

What is something people may be surprised to learn about you?

Jenny: Even though I have lived in Canada since grade seven, I never went Trick or Treating. I did this for the first time with Jenson two years ago – it was fun to see the houses decorated and the children in their costumes. I realized that I missed a lot of fun not participating when I was young.

Andrew: I was born in Vancouver and so am a Canadian. I spent my childhood years in Hong Kong and Macau, so I also hold British citizenship. Even though I was born here, and then went to high school and university here, English is my second language and I am still learning.

What do you find most challenging about being a Christian today?

Jenny: For me, the greatest challenge to ensuring I always stay close to God. Finding quiet time to talk with God every day is difficult.

Andrew: I agree with Jenny: it is easy to make excuses and move away from God. I think the most challenging part of being a Christian nowadays is that there are too many temptations—I know I need be a stronger Christian.

You are quite new to our church, but you are already involved! Tell us about that.

Jenny: I am part of Coffee Break which I joined because I wanted to meet people at LCRC and learn more about the Bible. I would love to get more involved in the near future.

Andrew: I always believe God has given us something to give back to the others. Giving is a blessing. Therefore, I encourage both myself and Jenny (perhaps Jenson) to give back to the church and to the community as much as we can. When Peter and Cara Klomps were recruiting choir members last year, I jumped in. Standing in front at church is definitely a new challenge for me since singing is probably not my best talent!

What is one of your favourite Bible passage?

Jenny: My favourite Bible passage is Matthew 4:3-4, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” In this passage, Jesus is being tempted by Satan. We are tempted by Satan especially when we are weak and lonely. We should learn from Jesus on how he resisted temptation, remembering these words from God and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, be obedient.

Andrew: My favourite passage is I Corinthians 13:4-8: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”
